Character.AI launches new feature that lets you talk on the phone with AI characters

Character.AI, a company based in San Francisco, has announced that users can now have conversations with AI characters over the phone. The feature supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

Prior to the official launch, the call feature was tested, during which more than 3 million users made more than 20 million calls. Character.AI said these AI call features can be used for language skill practice, mock interviews, or to increase interaction in role-playing games.

Users can talk directly to the user-generated AI character by pressing a button. The feature is designed to provide a smooth calling experience with less latency. Users can seamlessly switch between calls and text messages and stop the AI from speaking with the “click to interrupt” option.

In March, Character.AI launched the “Character Voices” feature, which allows users to hear the voice of a character in one-on-one chats. The company said users can now create their own voices, with more than 1 million voices in the app’s library.

Alongside the announcement of the new calling feature, Character.AI responded to complaints from Reddit users about changes to their characters’ personalities, saying that the company had not made major changes, but that some users who participated in the testing may have noticed differences in their characters’ behavior.
